Kim Lim was a Singaporean-British sculptor educated at St Martin’s School of Art and the Slade School of Art who died in 1997. The process of assembling works for her exhibition at the Roundhouse in spring 1979 ‘made me’, she said, ‘very aware of the pull within myself between the ordered, static experience and the dynamic rhythms of organic structured forms . . . How to incorporate and synthesise these two seemingly opposed elements within one work became . . . the starting point for the . . . stone sculptures.’ Martin Holman has argued that her work ‘unfolded in a cyclical way that thrived on invention and review.’ Lim’s Spiral II is almost a visual diagram of this trajectory, a series of sculptural forms detached from one another but recapitulating and varying each other’s forms, articulating space by implying an extension of their own ordering principles into the intervals of absence between and among the work’s component parts. Their setting in The Orchard at °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ, an area where cultivation has an informal style, brings out their aesthetic resolution of the tension between static order and organic growth. The spiral is very open-ended, as much projected as described, insisting on the potential for unlimited development rather than containment and completion.

Lim’s works seem both contemporary and ancient, evoking the reticent forms of the earliest sculptural traditions, in which humanity’s later obsession with rendering the true likeness of the appearance of things is avoided. These sculptures impress us rather with their desire for implication – of the true relations between states of being, both seen and unseen, between the narrow preoccupations of the human and what might extend beyond them.

°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ has all the benefits of being large, historical and prestigious college, whilst also retaining fantastic welfare: the staff and other students all care about each other, and will be there to cheer you on when you are thriving, but also there to support you if you need any help. I chose Jesus due to several reasons, including its prime location, where it is very central, and easy to access everywhere, even if you work in one of the institutes further out. I also selected Jesus for its MCR...

I chose Cambridge for my PGCE as it’s the leading UK institution for teacher training and Education, with an exciting, research-dominated, cutting edge course. The staff are welcoming and approachable, and make studying here an absolute joy. I’ve already completed one of my three primary school placements, in a reception class in a school just outside Cambridge, and am due to start the next one soon. I chose Jesus because of its reputation as a sporty College, but the proximity to the city centre is a big bonus. Jesus also...

When applying to Cambridge colleges it can feel a bit overwhelming as there are so many to choose from. I applied to °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ because it has a large MCR which was important for me because I wanted to feel part of a community. Now that I’m doing my PhD here, I’m very glad I did choose a college with a large postgraduate community. Throughout the year there are lots of postgraduate events, including formal dinners, special formals at Christmas and Easter, bops in the bar and film nights in...

°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ has been at the heart of my Cambridge experience. I chose the College because I was impressed by its distinctive blend of academic rigour and extracurricular achievement. A College for all-rounders, Jesus is a lively and rewarding place to study. I couldn’t be happier here! Friendly and engaged, the Jesus postgraduate community never ceases to impress me. At ease with themselves and forever curious, my peers go out of their way to cultivate a sense of camaraderie. After a day of leafing through old manuscripts at the National...

There are many reasons why I’m so happy to be a part of °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ. The three biggest reasons for me are the opportunities to be involved in College sport, the support the College provides for me with for my research and the help in making sure that we have comfortable, affordable accommodation when we have needed it. °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ is so friendly and so it is incredibly easy to get involved in the sport and social side of the College. The MCR does a great job in welcoming new...
